Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for Opioid and Alcohol Use Disorders

Methadone can carry risks such as dependency and strict clinic requirements, for this reason Bridgeway Recovery Center does not approve or offer this treatment option.

FDA‑Approved MAT Medications (for Substance Use Disorders – SUD)


Opioid Use Disorder (OUD)

Medication How It Works Notes & Side Effects Buprenorphine (Suboxone, Subutex, Sublocade) Partial opioid agonist – reduces cravings and withdrawal; has a “ceiling effect” that lowers overdose risk. Started after mild withdrawal; taken daily or longer-acting forms available. Side effects: headache, nausea, constipation. MethadoneFull agonist – fully activates opioid receptors to prevent withdrawal and cravings. Must be dispensed at certified opioid treatment programs. Side effects: constipation, sweating, possible cardiac issues. Naltrexone(Vivitrol) Opioid antagonist – blocks effects of opioids, preventing misuse. Requires detox and 7–10 days opioid-free. Monthly injection. Side effects: variable; some may experience headaches. 


Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD)

  • Naltrexone: Reduces cravings and relapse risk
  • Acamprosate and Disulfiram: Help maintain alcohol abstinence.
